Guild Auditions  2009

National Guild of Piano Teachers’
Annual Piano Auditions Instructions

1.  All participating students should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time.
2.  Please dress in appropriate “recital” attire:  dressy or semi-formal dresses for girls and button down shirt and nice pants, or shirt and tie or suite for boys.  All students should wear dress shoes (dressy sandals for girls are okay.)  Wear leather soles if using pedals.   No jeans or tennis shoes, please.  Long hair should be arranged away from the face.  Don’t forget to clip fingernails the day before!!
3.   All programs must be performed from memory.
4.   Bring all of your music on the day of the audition for the judge.
5.  Photocopies are not allowed.  Copyright laws are strictly enforced.  Contact Ms. Noreen immediately if you need to borrow a music book for a particular piece.
6.  The judge this year requests that you use post-it notes to mark each piece with THE SAME NUMBER AS ON THE REPORT CARD.  (No need to include title and composer. Check with Ms. Noreen to confirm the order of your pieces.  We will put the pieces in order, beginning with your favorite piece, playing all of your pieces in one book before changing to the next book.
7.  Be sure to know what keys your pieces are in.  Be prepared to play the scales and cadences to those pieces if you are in levels above Elementary A.

8.  Siblings that are sharing books should use different color post-it notes.

9.  Do not play any repeats in your music.   This may not apply to very short pieces.
10.    Please look for the green “Guild Auditions” sign and enter quietly through the door.  SSShhhh!  Other students will be auditioning, so please wait QUIETLY until the judge is ready for you! Open up your books in the order that we decided upon.   I will not be able to attend the auditions.  I will rely on the parents and older students maintain order and ask that the last performer of the day pick up the cards for me.
11.    Auditions are private.  No persons other than Judge and student are permitted within the adjudication room.
12.    Students do not need to bow when entering or exiting the audition.
13.    Bench:  Each student should take the time to properly adjust the piano bench and bring a footstool or pedal box as necessary.
14.    Enjoy your audition!  You’ve been working very hard towards a great goal and you should be proud of yourselves!  So relax, smile, be confident, and have fun!  Certificates and pins will be presented to the students at a lesson.
